In some places in the Aachen Forest, remains of the former Aachen Landgraben can still be found, which represented the outer border of the Aachen Empire. It consisted of a rampart with a ditch on both sides and was originally overgrown with a thick beech hedge. Of the total of 138 boundary stones, only about 20 are still there - they bear the coat of arms of the city of Aachen, the eagle, and are therefore also called "eagle stones".
Some of the tall beech trees that still exist near the Köpfchen border crossing have grown in a bizarre way - sometimes they are also called "harp trees".
