Remains of the former Aachener Landgraben, which represented the outer border of the Aachen empire, can still be found in some parts of the Aachen Forest. It consisted of a wall with a ditch on both sides and was originally covered with a dense beech hedge. Of the total of 138 landmarks, only about 20 are still present - they bear the coat of arms of the city of Aachen, the eagle, and are therefore also called "eagle stones".
The high-altitude beech trees that still exist here near the border crossing are sometimes bizarre - sometimes called "harp trees".

There are still some old beech trees, no more as a hedge, but large trees. The hedgerows and moat used to hold out groups of horsemen who might raid the city.
