Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)
Remains of the former Aachener Landgraben, which represented the outer border of the Aachen empire, can still be found in some parts of the Aachen Forest. It consisted of a wall with a ditch on both sides and was originally covered with a dense beech hedge. Of the total of 138 landmarks, only about 20 are still present - they bear the coat of arms of the city of Aachen, the eagle, and are therefore also called "eagle stones".
The high-altitude beech trees that still exist here near the border crossing are sometimes bizarre - sometimes called "harp trees".
