The De Sjouwer monument was erected in 1974 in the LAR industrial zone (Lauwe-Aalbeke-Rekkem) on a hill formed after the excavation of the E17 there and in honor/memory of the many West Flemish cross-border workers who went to do seasonal work in France. The largest peak therefore points towards France. The E17 and its many industrial zones meant that they may now have to rotate the monument in honor of the many French people who now work in the region.
