The official bike trail leads across the road and from the bike parking area directly to the historic building.
The Nordkerke family built a water castle in 1300. Dietrich Notkerke, descendant of the von BrΓΌnninghausen family, left the old village in the 14th century and chose this place as his residence. Beside the actual castle the family owned areas in Barop, Hacheney, Wellinghofen, Kleinholthausen and LΓΌcklemberg, as well as extensive forests on the northern slopes of the Ardey range.
By marriage, the estate came into possession of a branch of the Rodenberg family in 1483, later called Romberg. In 1560 to 1571, Conrad of Romberg replaced the dilapidated water castle with a new palace, with a tower each on the north-west and south-east corner. In 1681 Conrad Philipp of Romberg had the castle renovated and the gatehouse built. The castle was destroyed in World War II, the surviving gatehouse was restored in 1959.

In the historical walls is now the Municipal Art Gallery Torhaus Rombergpark. A narrow spiral staircase leads to the approximately 100 square-meter half-timbered hall, where works were presented for the first time in 1968.
Eight of the twelve exhibitions held annually are reserved for contemporary local artists, who are proposed by the two Dortmund artist associations, the "Dortmunder Group" and the "WestfΓ€lisches KΓΌnstlerbund", Dortmund, as well as the two resident professional associations of the visual artists. Other exhibitions are devoted to non-organized artists and foreign artists, especially from the partner cities. Admission is free.

In the tower, my grandfather used to work as a minder at the art exhibitions :)

In Rombergpark cycling is prohibited. Time and again, cyclists override the ban, environmental activists and the friends and supporters of the Botanic Garden Rombergpark are vehemently campaigning for stronger controls by public order and police and defend themselves vehemently.
