    Hiking

About 1,600 animals of 173 species live here. The park landscape with its old stock of trees and the various animal houses make a visit to the zoo an experience for the whole family, whatever the weather.
For the little ones there is a wonderful, large playground, and there are snacks and ice creams on every corner.

Dortmund Zoo is a beautifully laid out zoological garden with over 1200 animals across more than 220 species from around the world. It specializes in the keeping and breeding of South American species, and is leading in the breeding of the giant anteater, the tamandua and the giant otter. The zoo opened 1953 on the site of a former coal mine in the south of the city between the boroughs of Hacheney and Brünninghausen.

A highlight in this zoo: Ailurus fulgens fulgens, the first discovered panda roaming in Nepal, Bhutan, India, and China, is red and more like a raccoon. Not related to its bigger black/white Chinese cousin-in-name-only, it's one of the cutest endangered mammals out there. Dortmund Zoo shows them in a well-managed climbing enclosure and participates in a worldwide breeding and preservation program. dortmund.de/de/freizeit_und_kultur/zoo_dortmund/tiere_im_zoo/zootiere/kleinerpanda.html
