The ruin of the eleven thousand maiden tower (also called eleven thousand maiden mill) in the district Elsheim owes its name to a legend around the holy Ursula of Cologne.

This late medieval roadblock was at the transition of the old road from Mainz to Kreuznach on the Selz (west of the village). Saint Ursula is said to have used the road with her entourage of 11,000 virgins on her way to Rome - hence the name "Eleventh Thousand Maiden's Tower". It is at the tower originally a fortified gatehouse with bridge. The course of the Selz was relocated in the 1960s, so that the bridge no longer crosses the Selz today.

The largely ruined ruins have recently been renovated and the atmosphere around the ruins has been upgraded. The Elsheimer Schnorressänger have taken over the sponsorship for the building in 2006. This is also documented humorously on the stone in front of the tower (in front of the picture):

(Quote) ... In the hope that another 11,000 virgins will follow this path, the Elsheim Schnorressänger 2006 took over the sponsorship
