Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Chief Engineer to the Great Western Railway Company,
was appointed to oversee the construction of a mile long tunnel near Mickleton on the Oxford to Worcester line. The contractors made slow progress, complaining of the difficulties caused by water and clay. Brunel twice tried to sack them but they refused to leave the site and finally barricaded themselves in the tunnel.
Brunel secretly sent messages to his own workmen down the line, and in the early hours of one morning in the summer of 1851 they converged on the tunnel and fierce fighting broke out. Some 3,000 men were involved in the fight. The Riot Act was read but many injuries were incurred. Brunel finally succeeded in evicting the contractors and the dispute was submitted to arbitration, Hewon and-took over the job although he subsequently resigned before the tunnel was completed.
