It is frost shattering, also called cryoclasty, which over millennia has transformed, through successive cycles of freezing and thawing of water, the primordial rock into millions of rocks.
Water easily infiltrates the limestone and then literally explodes it by passing from a liquid to a solid state. The volume of water increases by about 9% each time this process takes place.
