It is gelifraction, also called cryoclasty, which over the millennia has transformed the primordial rock into millions of rocks through successive cycles of freezing and thawing of water.
Water easily seeps into the limestone and then literally explodes it, going from a liquid to a solid state. The volume of water increases by approximately 9% each time this process takes place.
