The Temple of the Company houses the most valuable paintings of Arequipa from the sixteenth century and the most remarkable Baroque altarpieces of the city. The sixty-six oil paintings form an important collection by two masters who had a significant influence on the painting of the Viceroyalty: the Jesuit monks Bernardo Bitti and Diego de la Puente.

La Iglesia de la Compañía - the Church of the Company, which was built by the Jesuits in the XVIIth Century, makes an impression by its carved façade that was finished in 1698. Its pulpit in carved wood and its old sacristy, well-known as the so called Sixtine Chapel AREQUIPA PICTURE AREQUIPAof Arequipa, was the fruit of the work of anonymous indigenous artists, who imprimed in the work their own colour, their own motives and their own spirit. The Church of the Company was one of the first temples of Arequipa in which sillar was used. Its Plateresque facade of Mestizo inspiration is quite sumptuous, with colourful and streamlined ornaments with vine leaves, bunches of grapes, flowers, birds, angels and indigenous masks with hairdos adorned with long feathers.

The main city square. As usual in Peru, right next to the cathedral. The town hall is located on the opposite side. In the evening this is fairly safe thanks to the large police presence. A really nice place with a great view of the cathedral. There are numerous shops and restaurants all around.
