The Hesselberg is the highest elevation in Middle Franconia, various trails and trails lead to the mountain plateau. You can conquer the mountain from all sides. And if you want to make a detour to the Ă–ttinger Forst. This forest area stretches from WassertrĂĽdingen to DinkelsbĂĽhl and offers forest trails, trails and trails at its best. Here you are welcome to travel 100 KM without using a larger stretch of road. The Ă–ttinger forest is partly very hilly and has steep sections, so you come here on altimeters.

The classic at the Hesselberg, from the plateau Osterwiese it's just down steeply. At the linden left and then left holding the beautiful root trail along the northern slope. Short dirt road and then on the Judensteig (final climb ultra steep) back to the plateau.
The Hesselberg offers many more trails. My tip: best early in the morning and during the week biking. The Hesselberg is also a very popular hiking area.

        Pre and early history
Already in prehistoric times, the first settlers visited the Hesselberg as an escape and residence. Archaeological finds from the Stone Age (around 10,000 to 2000 BC) were made primarily in the area of the Easter meadow. In the Bronze Age (approx. 2000 to 1300 BC) the mountain began to be continuously populated. In the urn field period (around 1200 to 750 BC), the settlement was surrounded on the plateaus with ring walls, ditches and ramparts. The remains of the 5 km long ramparts around the Osterwiese, Ehinger and Gerolfinger Berg still give an idea of the former importance of this fortification. An important political, economic and religious tribal center developed behind the protective masonry. For a long time these facilities were assigned to the Celts. But only a single find (weapons of a warrior) from the Latène period (500 to 15 BC) indicates a short visit by the Celts. In the troubled times of the Migration Period and until the Middle Ages, people used the old ramparts of the Hesselberg as a refuge and for defense. Numerous exhibits in the form of tools and weapons can be viewed in the city museum in Oettingen and in the museum for prehistory and early history in Gunzenhausen.
