The Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal is just always nice. Here the former towpath makes a bend around the place where the barges used to moor. The canal was relatively short in operation due to the long construction time before it was replaced by the railway.

Of the once seven ports on the Ludwig Canal, five still exist today: Kelheim, Beilngries, Neumarkt i.d. Opf., Worzeldorf and Bamberg. The ports were mostly mutual spreading of the canal bed. They were of different lengths and edged with vertical quay walls. The harbor master's house, warehouse and crane rounded off the port ensemble and - as here - are still partially preserved in the locations mentioned today. Cranes designed and manufactured by the Spaeth machine factory in Nuremberg were used for loading and unloading. The most common goods transported on the canal were building materials for the cities, which expanded rapidly with factories and new residential areas in the 19th century during industrialization. In Beilngries too, the then almost unprofitable bricks received new orders from Nuremberg and expanded.
