The Main-Danube Canal (MDK) is a 171-kilometer long federal waterway in Bavaria, which connects the Main at Bamberg with the Danube at Kelheim. The canal was built between 1960 and 1992. It was used as a continuous shipping lane between the North Sea near Rotterdam and the Black Sea near Constanţa (Romania), which runs over the Rhine, Main and Danube. Therefore, the channel is also known as the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal (RMD channel). Regionally he is often referred to as a distinction from his predecessor Ludwig-Danube-Main-Kanal simply Neuer Kanal. The 17-kilometer peak, which crosses the low mountain range Franconian Alb as the European main watershed Rhine-Danube, is 406 m above sea level. NN the highest point of the European waterway network. As a freight transport route (especially for container transports), the RMD channel is steadily losing importance, on the other hand, it is increasingly attracting tourists and river cruises.

I walked Bamberg-Erlangen on the Main-Danube-Canal today. It is good for endurance training.
