Neeltje Jans was until the beginning of the construction of the Delta Works only a sandbar at the mouth of the Oosterschelde in the North Sea. For the work, however, the sandbank was raised and there was a working island, which was used during the construction of the large storm surge Oosterscheldekering (Wikipedia).
