Originally a statue of Mary was placed here in an oak, according to stories it was a fever tree. In the current chapel there is a copy of this statue. The original statue is located in the Saint Peter's Basilica in Oirschot. In the 15th century, a wooden chapel was erected near the oak, which was destroyed in the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648). Then a brick building was built that was too small for an altar. Due to the large influx, a larger building was placed in 1606. The current chapel was built on the foundations of this brick building in 1854.

Popular piety has given this place with the Chapel of Our Lady the name "Holy Oak", probably knowing full well that this name is not correct in a strict interpretation. A tree cannot be "holy" in the official church's sense; people who have lost their lives because of their faith (martyrs = blood witnesses) or who have been declared saints because of their exemplary Christian lifestyle are venerated as saints (or blessed). However, the local tradition of the discovery of the image of the Virgin Mary in an oak tree has shaped this place so much that it was given this name.
