The impressive construction in relation to the city size was built between the 13th and 14th century in the style of the north German brick Gothic. The exact start of construction is unknown.

Built in the 14th-15th century in Gothic style, the dedication took place in 1292. The 86-meter-high tower was built in the Baroque style and received its present form after the fire of 1671-1680.

In the center of Uelzen's city center stands the mighty Gothic St. Mary's Church with its 86-meter-high steeple and the Apostles' Chapel, also known as the Ellerndorf Chapel, donated in 1350. The building, impressive for the size of the town, was built in three phases between the 13th and 14th centuries. St. Mary's was consecrated and elevated to parish status in 1292.

The church tower was only built after the completion of the high choir (1385).

The square, lightly structured tower was given a Baroque appearance between 1671 and 1680 after the "Great Fire," which also destroyed the interior of the church.

The spire burned down on April 18, 1945, and was rebuilt in a new form in 1954.

In a wall niche in the entrance area of St. Mary's Church stands the "Golden Ship," which was probably brought to Uelzen during the Hanseatic League. There are many explanations regarding its origin, age, and former use. It is likely a former reliquary.

The St. Anne's Altar from St. Viti's Chapel, probably a Lüneburg carving from 1506,
has found a new home in the chapel's choir. The paintings in the choir vault
depict the 12 apostles, a mercy seat, and Christ enthroned.

They were uncovered and restored in 1962.

The stained-glass windows were designed by Renate Strasser and
also depict scenes from the lives of the apostles.

After thorough renovation by the Eule company from Bautzen, the main organ
was put back into operation on the first Sunday of Advent 2001.

With its 53 registers, it is the largest organ in the Lüneburg Heath. The Baroque organ facade from 1756 is particularly worth seeing.
