The pass connects the Aveto valley with the upper Taro valley and marks the border between Emilia Romagna and Liguria. Beautiful mountain environment rich in vegetation.

There are two ascents to Passo del Chiodo plus the ridge road from Passo del Tomarlo.
The most beautiful but also most demanding ascent starts in the Taro Valley, near Pontestrambo. On 14.4 km 885 Hm are to be overcome. Especially the part from Alpe is quite steep but also very beautiful and car-free. In the upper part it becomes much flatter. You come to a very pretty beech forest, which adds another landscape to the driveway.
The other ascent comes from Gramizza, from the Aveto Valley. The asphalt is not particularly good, so the route is not necessarily recommended as a descent. The detour via the Tomarlo is worthwhile if you still have enough legs. At 11.5 km, the road climbs 720 m in altitude. It is also steep, but more even than the ascent from the Taro Valley.

I arrived at Passo del Chiodo from Passo del Tomarlo. I then went down to Alpe.
What I can say is that the climb to Passo del chiodo from the side that starts from Alpe is challenging and that the asphalt in the last km is not really that great!
