The Howieker water mill was built in 1608 as a grain mill with an undershot water wheel by the Howiek farmers Dietrich, Oltmann and Gerd zu Howiek on the Ollenbäke. Since the watercourse had many turns and little gradient, the backwater flooded the adjacent meadows. That is why the residents are said to have pulled up the dam bulkheads at night and pierced the embankments of the mill dam. Despite the disputes, the mill operated for 300 years.

Going to the mill by bike is simply part of it. Take something to feast on and enjoy the break. Well, you can also take good photos, there is a lot to explore.

The story of the Howieker water mill

Around 1600 there was no mill in Ocholt and Howiek. The Howiek farmers had to have their grain ground in the trestle mill in Gießelhorst, six kilometers away. In order to avoid this arduous journey and to save time, the three Howiek farmers Dietrich, Oltmann and Gerd zu Howiek decided to build a water mill for themselves on the Ollenbäke. When they applied for a building permit, it was not granted. The owners of the adjoining mops had probably protested because they feared flooding from the damming of the water. However, the Howiekers were not intimidated and turned to the sovereign, the Count of Oldenburg. However, there were difficulties here too. Eventually the construction was approved on the condition that the watermill would be built on the 'highest bült' of Howiek.
