It has three legs and, as befits a giraffe, a very long neck. Since 1959, it has been standing in the Silesian Park in Chorzów.
The three-legged giraffe is the work of three Krakow artists. The authors of the artistic design are the artists Leopold Pędzialek and Leszek Dutka. The structural design was made by Eng. Jerzy Tombiński. The giraffe stands at one of the main entrances to the Silesian Park from ul. Chorzow. The avenue that starts leads straight to the Silesian Zoological Garden. This road was called, of course, Giraffe Avenue.
The sculpture was created out of ... the need for information. When in 1958 the provisional zoo from ul. Łani, it turned out that people do not know which stop to get off to the new zoo. Thus, the 16-meter Giraffe was created, a kind of hallmark. Work on the sculpture lasted about two months. The zyrafa was cast in 1959 in Gliwice Zakłady Urządzeń Technicznych.
The giraffe is white, although it was repainted yellow in 2000, with brown patches added to the legs and halfway down the neck. In April 2011, the sculpture underwent a facelift. Renovated and white again, it was entered in the register of monuments in Chorzów. Sometimes the sculpture is backlit.
