The Old Postal Route was already used in 1561 by messengers, partly on foot but also on horseback, to transmit messages from Engen to Alsace. From 1700 onwards, the Old Postal Route lost importance when the so-called Dauphin Road was built from Engen to Donaueschingen. Even today, the Old Postal Route is known as a hiking trail beyond the borders. The starting point is the car park at the Old Postal Route Hut, above Watterdingen.
