Priest Adolf Daens campaigned for political and social reforms and championed the interests of workers, peasants and small business owners.
As the figurehead of the Christian People's Party and representative for Aalst, he came into conflict several times with the Catholic party, the conservatives, senior clergy and behind the scenes also with King Leopold II.

“Neither slave nor beggar may the worker be. He must be a free and prosperous man,' said priest Daens, in his pulpit in the Sint-Martinuskerk in Aalst. This can also be read at the bottom of the statue on Werfplein where the priest is surrounded by a working-class family. He often walked along the banks of the nearby Dender and saw the social abuses.

His birthplace, or rather the place where this house once stood, can be found at 11 Kerkstraat.

In 1992 Stijn Coninx made a film into the book Pieter Daens by Louis Paul Boon. A series of musical performances by Studio 100 followed in 2008 and 2020.

The statue was erected in 1957 with the support of the Priest Daensfonds. The statue shows a group: a priest reaching out to a worker and his son. He stands in their midst as the guide and the comforter. Behind them hides a folk woman with a child in her arm. The following text can be read on the monument: “Neither slave nor beggar may the worker be. He must be a free and prosperous man.” The statue is on the Werfplein in Aalst.
