Kinghorn is known for being the place where, in 1286, King Alexander III died. At the time he was married to a beautiful young French princess, Yolande of Dreux, Queen of Scotland and a Queen Consort and pregnant. Returning to Kinghorn Castle from Edinburgh on a stormy night with his two esquires, you could imagine how wild the coast may have looked. The three of them managed to cross the Firth of Forth by boat, as they rode along the path, the King got separated from his esquires and the next day the King’s body was found shattered with foot twisted on the shore at Pettycur Bay, just beyond Kinghorn. This memorial to him can be seen in Kinghorn.
