In the very north of Alsace, Wissembourg (German White Castle) is a particularly attractive holiday destination. The town boasts a well-preserved medieval town center with a wealth of architecturally remarkable buildings.
Wissembourg developed from a Benedictine abbey founded in the 7th century and was authoritative for German poetry. The two monuments on the Gaisberg, which commemorate both the French and the German fallen soldiers of the Battle of Weissenburg, are reminiscent of the rich past marked by numerous changes of power.
