The house, gardens and park of the "Bois des Moutiers" were created by Guillaume Mallet from 1898.
The then 29-year-old architect Sir Edwin Lutyens built a house in Varengeville that is unique in France, inspired by the "Arts & Crafts" movement and the ideas of its founder William Morris. One of their goals was a return to craftsmanship. The gardens surrounding the house were designed by the architect in collaboration with the owner and the well-known English garden architect Miss Gertrude Jekyll. Designed as a continuation of the house, this walled space is very structured. The gardens are connected to each other and gradually lead to the deliberately natural, large landscape park. The park, with an area of 12 hectares, was entirely planted by G. Mallet in a small valley facing the sea. The Mallet family still lives there permanently and strives to continue the founder's work.
