The typical Carinthian wayside shrine with shaft, niche structure and helmet developed in the Gothic period and spread primarily in Lower Carinthia, as well as in parts of the former Duchy of Carinthia. In Carinthia, four particularly valuable cultural and historical jewels come from the Gothic period: the wayside shrines from St. Stefan and Reisach in the Gailtal, from St. Walburgen in the Görtschitztal and St. Martin am Techelsberg with their e.g. T. still very well preserved or restored Gothic frescoes.
