Saint-Marc Abbey of Sigismundzell

St. Mark is one of the oldest monasteries in the country: it goes back, under the name of "Sigismundzell", until the Merovingian period, before the year 740.
In the 10th century, the abbey, like other monasteries of the region, was destroyed during the wars and incursions which will characterize this time. In 1050, the Pope of Alsace, Leo IX, raised the monastery from its ruins, established Benedictine monks there and made call this valley and its monastery of the word of "Saint-Marc", from where its current name.

Superb place, very quiet. Many paths start from here to reach either the ridges (firstplan and small balloon), or towards the vineyard and its castles (gueberschwihr, voeglinshoffen, the 3 castles, etc ...)
