Not far from the lake (follow the signs) is the city center of Haltern with marketplace, historic town hall, and the many cafes.
The first Sunday of the month is open to sales, it can get crowded.

Nevertheless, a nice place to stay.

The Haltern Reservoir (officially: Stever Dam Haltern or Haltern Dam) is a dam near Haltern am See. It was built between 1927 and 1930, holds 20.5 million cubic metres of water and belongs to Gelsenwasser AG. The Stever and Haltern Mühlenbach are dammed.
The dam is 1,300 metres long and 8.9 metres high. The overflow structure is a 130-metre-long weir. Originally the reservoir was much smaller, with a capacity of four million cubic metres; it was expanded to 20.5 million cubic metres by 1972. The reservoir consists of two sub-basins, the north and south basins. In the north basin there is an island with a size of around 30 hectares.

Nearby, about two kilometers upstream on the River Stever, is the Hullern Dam.

The dam is a drinking water reservoir and supplies more than a million people in the western Münsterland and northern Ruhr area with drinking water through the Haltern waterworks.
