Best Hiking Routes to Buchholz Railway Embankment

Tips

  • Originally built as a facility for the Bröltal Railway, later the Rhein-Sieg Railway, for small rail traffic, the railway embankment is now a popular destination for pedestrians, cyclists, hikers, Nordic walkers and joggers, which is also used to hold sporting competitions.
On August 15, 1892, the railway from Buchholz to Asbach was opened. The basalt quarries of Limbergskopf, Mückenfeldchen, Bennau and Plagerkopf were connected for freight transport, as was the Wilhelm Winggen company, the machine factory and the loan association in Asbach. The small train brought a big economic boom.
However, due to the increase in road traffic, rail traffic was discontinued in the 1950s. Passenger transport between Hennef and Asbach ended in August 1956, freight transport between Krautscheid and Asbach in December 1959. In 1975 the association of Asbach acquired the railway embankment from Asbach and Buchholz to Bennau from Basalt AG Linz as a route for the laying of the sewage connection lines from Asbach and Buchholz to the pond sewage treatment plant Bennau. This took place in 1977/1978.
