The largest part of the Curonian Spit in Lithuania became the Curonian Spit National Park, and since 1945 the Russian part of the Curonian Spit National Park, known as the Kaliningrad Oblast. Unfortunately, in 2006 over 200 hectares of pine forest burned in the northern part (Lithuania) of the Spit. The Lithuanian part of the Spit is a popular tourist destination, the Russian part is less accessible to tourists, also because of the Visazwang. Many beautiful hiking trails lead through the forests of the Curonian Spit.
