For the year 954 AD Roßtal is first mentioned as urbs horsadal. The monk Widukind of Corvey reported about it in his history of Saxony. On June 17, 954 a fierce battle took place around this place. King Otto I tried in vain to take the urbs horsadal. At over 5,2 hectares, it was one of the most powerful fortifications of its time.
