The Bernepark is an industrial monument of a special kind: for nearly forty years wastewater was cleared here. Then the plant with the two circular basins and the machine house was shut down and almost fell into oblivion, until the Emschergenossenschaft decided the revitalization as place of the industrial culture. From the former, inaccessible wastewater treatment plant, a park was opened for EMSCHERKUNST.2010. The internationally renowned artist Piet Oudolf, Gross. Max, Mischa Kuball, Lawrence Weiner and Andreas Strauss created this fairytale park under the direction of the Essen planning office dtp Landschafsarchitekten. They transformed one of the clarifiers into a sunken garden and transformed the walk-in pool into a green amphitheater with 21,000 perennials and grasses.

The artist Guido Berndsen, together with children from Ebel, has redesigned the district entrance under the A42 motorway bridge: a group of life-size concrete sheep graze on the green strip.kulturkanal.ruhr/emscher-galerie-weidende-schafewaz.de/staedte/bottrop/article8240162/kunst-schafe-koennten-bald-an-der-emscher-weiden.html
