One of the most significant squares in Mantua.
The square, formerly called Prato di Castello, is accessed from Piazza Sordello, through the monumental frescoed entrance, the work of Antonio Maria Viani. The space opens inside the Palazzo Ducale, the historic residence of the Gonzaga family, lords of Mantua and the castle of San Giorgio. It was built in the 16th century by the architect Giovan Battista Bertani, a pupil of Giulio Romano and Prefect of the Gonzaghesche factories, from 1549 to 1576.
Surrounded on three sides by porticoes frescoed with round arches, it communicates with the entrance to the castle, through which you access the famous Camera degli Sposi, work by Andrea Mantegna of 1465-1474.
From piazza castello you enter the square in front of the palatine basilica of Santa Barbara, always built by Bertani in the second half of the sixteenth century.
Where once the court theater once stood, destroyed several times, the National Archaeological Museum opens.
The square is used for events related to the Festivaletteratura.
