It is one of the most fairytale-like castles in the Netherlands. The moated Schaloen Castle, as it looks now, looks something like a French hunting lodge.

The very first building from the twelfth century burned down completely in the sixteenth century. The outbuildings, stables and barns date from the eighteenth century.

After the French occupation, the castle was given its current appearance with the western tower and staircase tower during a restoration by architect Pierre Cuypers in 1894.

Tip! If you look into the moat from the large stone bridge, you will definitely see a lot of carp swimming…

The rectangular castle is built of marl and originally dates from the 12th century. Then it was a little smaller. It was expanded in the following century but almost completely burned down in 1575. On the map of Jacob van Deventer in 1550, the castle attributed to Sloenes is clearly visible in its current form. In the middle is a residential tower with an extension as an entrance. A wing was added on both sides. The Arkel turrets date from the 16th century. There is a wide channel around it.

Very beautiful castle located on the river de Geul near Valkenburg. The castle houses a hotel, with a nice cafeteria in the courtyard. Absolutely worth seeing!

In the east of Valkenburg aan de Geul, in the district of "Oud Valkenburg", lies the "Kasteel Schaloen", surrounded by a moat and built of marlstone, which was first mentioned in 1375. In 1381 the castle was owned by the knight Johan Struver van Hulsberg.

The distinctive corner towers of Kasteel Schaloen were added in 1575.

Kasteel Schaloen was conquered by Lodewijk van Nassau in 1574 and a year later set on fire and badly damaged by Spanish troops during the Dutch-Spanish War. It was not rebuilt until 1656 by Johan Hoen van Cartiels. Through the gatehouse, which was built at the beginning of the 18th century and now houses a restaurant, you reach the forecourt, which was built about 100 years earlier and contains the outbuildings that were formerly used for agricultural purposes and have since been converted into apartments and rented out to holiday guests.
