To the north west of Glasgow lie the beautiful Kilpatrick Hills, a moorland range of volcanic origin, speckled with reservoirs. Duncolm is the largest, with a summit at 1,316 feet (401 m), and lies fairly centrally. One of Duncolm’s major draws is its feeling of wilderness, despite being so close to Scotland’s largest city. It’s fairly easy to access and the terrain can be boggy and steep at the summit, but still very achievable by most.
A common approach is from the south, at Kilpatrick Braes, where you’ll find a car park. There are plenty of trails through the hills though, so you can add Duncolm into a longer adventure and start at any number of places. The summit sits in a trio with its similar neighbours, Little Duncolm and Middle Duncolm – both of which are fun to summit en route.
At the top, you’ll find a trig pillar and brilliant views in clear weather. To the north, the Highlands are shadows on the horizon with Loch Lomond in the fore while the Campsie Fells promise more adventures to the east.
