Straken is derived from the Sorbian word strega, which means “gutter” or “ditch”. It stands for a system of descending springs (13 are proven), partially enclosed, which are connected by pipes or channels and are brought together to form a trickle. From 1625 onwards, the 1400-meter-long Straken water pipe ran parallel to Weinbergstrasse to the west from the bottom collecting shot to the Röhrbrunnen- und Elector Augusti Brunnenhaus, a water house in the electoral Hoflößnitz.
