As early as 1938, the Kudensee and its surroundings were placed under protection. The entire area covers an area of 246 hectares. The water surface of the lake with its reed zones as well as the former rinsing fields and wet grasslands in the south in the communities of Kuden and Averlak serve to preserve endangered plant and animal communities of an inland lake typical of the marshland.
In the post-ice age, a sheltered sea bay with extensive marshland and shallow water areas was created between the spit and the edge of the Geest.

Since the middle of the 18th century, the natural silting process of this shallow lake has been accelerated by drainage measures. The lake area was reduced to 500 hectares in 1722, finally to today's 25 hectares, at a depth of 0.30 - 0.80 meters at the end. In 1983 the water depth was brought to two meters and the Friedrichshöfer Au was directed around the lake.

A good overview of the Kudensee can be obtained from a vantage point on the Geestkante in the village of Kuden. In the reserve itself, a wooden viewing platform on the western edge of the lake invites you to observe nature.
In addition to reed warblers and various types of duck, the bearded tit, bittern, marsh harrier and great crested grebe regularly breed in the dense reed beds. The damp meadows in the area still offer a home to threatened bird species such as the lapwing.

The wet grasslands are cultivated extensively by farmers and, with the help of smaller dams, develop excellently for breeding or resting water and meadow birds. A pair of white-tailed eagles has been raising their young here regularly for several years.
