The church was built on a resting place of Boniface's funeral procession from Mainz to his desired resting place in Fulda. It seems unlikely that it was built before the 16th century. As a church building, it probably existed only for a short time. In the 19th century, the ruin was heavily overgrown with trees and bushes. From 2002 to 2003, excavations as part of the Bonifatius Route project revealed no further findings. The ruin was restored in 2004. The building was 7.10 × 4.20 meters in size and had no apse. The sheep church was first mentioned in 1578, when it had long been a ruin.
