On August 18, 1955, the subject of “Mellrichstadt - a future garrison town” was on the city council's agenda for the first time.
Mayor Alfons Halbig was very committed to the armed forces, first clarified the land issue with his city councils and the population (100 hectares had to be made available), got the support of the local business community and paved the way for the construction work that was soon to begin.
The decision to make Mellrichstadt a garrison town was made on June 13, 1956.
At that time it was already clear that an armored infantry battalion with an anti-tank hunter and training company was to find accommodation in Mellrichstadt.
Construction of this barracks began on May 3rd, 1960.
On September 5, 1962, the advance commandos of Panzer Grenadier Battalion 352 and Field Artillery Battalion 355 were able to move into the new barracks.
The ceremonial handover of the keys by Chief Finance President Dr. Pollinger to the site elder, Lieutenant Colonel Hahn, took place on November 16, 1962.
