Coevorden Castle is the only castle in Drenthe. It was built at a place in the marsh where one could cross. In Old Saxon, such a place is called a "voorde," which is how the name Coevorden originated. Amongst all the peat bogs, this ford formed a strategic point on the transit route from Friesland and Groningen to far into Germany.
