Großes Kaap (Great Beacon) Borkum

Seepeilzeichen or Bake anno 1872. Made of red clinker bricks, with a wooden top sign, both large and small kaap are still in a very good condition today :-).

The three kaaps (beacons) on Borkum - the Großes Kaap, the Kleines Kaap and the Oostbake - together with the Old Lighthouse served as a navigation aid for shipping. The kaaps in their present form of brick with wooden top marks were built in 1872. Nowadays they are historical monuments and landmarks of Borkum.
The Great Kaap (Osterems-Bake) - built north of the village on a 9m high dune - is 23.4 m high and the largest of the buildings.
The Big Kaap is about half a kilometer away from the Little Kaap.
