One of the first things you will see when you approach Fano city center is that it is partially surrounded by ancient walls. These city walls were built by the Romans and expanded in the Middle Ages by the Malatesta family. The most prominent feature is the magnificent Arco di Augusto, which served as the gateway to the city in Roman times.
