In 1020 Emperor Heinrich II donated Gerardus von Antoing to Wassenberg Castle and Land. From then on, he called himself Gerhard Graf von Wassenberg and founded the Grafenhaus Wassenberg, which founded the Grafdern Geldern at Wassenberg Castle after four generations. However, Wassenberg Castle has existed for much longer; the previous building was probably a Roman weir.
