Running close to the Arizona National Scenic Trail is the Great Western Trail, a a north-south long distance multiple use route which runs from Canada to Mexico through Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana. Since it is basically following backcountry roads, it might be more suitable for mountainbiking than for hiking, but it is a nice alternative for the Arizona Trail in this section.
