During the Russian-Turkish War of Liberation, the island became a strategic base for Turkish artillery. This is evidenced by the iron cannons found in its waters. In 1784, the monastery was visited by a French officer, Lafitte-Clave, who found Turkish troops stationed there on the island against possible attacks by the Russian navy.
