Burgas bay is the largest on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The gulf is also the westernmost part of the Black Sea, and due to the high iron, manganese and magnesium content, it has 41 km in width with black sand.
In the waters of the bay of Burgas is located the only inhabited island on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast – Saint Anastasia. The island has emerged since the eruption of a volcano, and as a result of storms and sea waves, strange rock formations have appeared - The Mushroom, the Dragon, the Fossilised Pirate Ship, and the Sun Gate. The piece of land is 6,5 km (4 nautical miles) southeast of Burgas, is placed between Cape Chukalya and Cape Atia.
