Mettlach boasts many attractions due to its past.
Mettlach emerged from an abbey founded around 676 by the Frankish Duke Lutwinus - later Bishop of Trier. the monastery was under abbot Lioffin 990 built as an octagon St. Mary's Church as a sepulchral church for its founder. This "Old Tower" is the oldest surviving sacred building in the Saarland. The abbey building, which can be seen today, was built in the 18th century. In 1792, French revolutionary groups looted the monastery, which was dissolved in the sequence and secularized in 1794. In 1809, Jean Francois Boch-Buschmann bought the abbey buildings and set up a ceramics factory there, which quickly became a global company.
