A strong castle at this point is first mentioned in 1291. The castle was destroyed in the devastating fire in Harpstedt in 1739 (which also destroyed the church and large parts of the town) and demolished in the years that followed. The Amtshof was built on the foundation walls. However, the west wing that completes today's building dates from 1980/81. The Amtshof is still surrounded by the former moat (great views!) and now, after extensive restoration, serves as the seat of the joint municipal administration.
