The largely still well-preserved hill castle was built around 1230 and is located in the beautiful Wildenburger Land (today Kreis Altenkirchen)

The castle was Wildenburg Palace from 1239-1418 administrative seat of the Free Imperial Rule Wildenburg and served to secure the old Hileweg (Hellweg), which connected Essen with the Wetterau. Later part of the Eisenstraße (Siegen-Gummersbach-Wuppertal)
The castle is privately owned by those of Hatzfeld who restored the remains in the 80s. Unfortunately, you can only enter the area of the outer bailey, in the castle itself is an extension of the Hatzfeld forester's house.
