A great hiking trail from the castle down to Schwalenberg's old town—or, for a more strenuous hike, up! Along the way, you'll enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding area and the old town.

Schwalenberg is one of the two eponymous districts of Schieder-Schwalenberg and was first mentioned in writing in 1127 as Sualenbergh. It is arranged as if on a terrace around the castle hill of the old Schwalenberg castle. The history of the old farming town of Schwalenberg as a painter's town and artists' colony begins in the late 19th century, when the small town became an insider tip for impressionist open-air landscape painters due to the beauty of the landscape and the exceptional light conditions in the Schwalenberg Mörth valley. Artists from major cities, such as Düsseldorf or Berlin, came to Schwalenberg to conduct open-air studies and then, by presenting their works in the big cities, increased Schwalenberg's popularity, so that it was soon called a "painter's town" and "painter's colony." After the painter's town's heyday, a period of stagnation followed, partly due to the Second World War. In the post-war years, only a few artists came to the town. Since 1978, the Lippe Regional Association and the town of Schieder-Schwalenberg have been reviving this almost forgotten tradition with regular art exhibitions and art events, in order to breathe new artistic life into the old painter's town. The focus is on a variety of exhibitions each year, which take place in the Municipal Gallery and the Robert Koepke House.
