"There are many legends about the Melsbacher Kreuzkirche, the ruins of which are on the outskirts of Melsbach in the direction of Neuwied, especially about its origins. Its name is also controversial, sometimes it is said that it used to be called" Heilig-Kreuz-Kapelle ", then" Church on the Cross ”or“ Church on the Holy Cross ”.
What is certain, however, is that it is much older than Melsbach itself. In most cases it is said that the chapel was built in the 10th or 11th century. In further historical research it is even said that it must have originated in the 6th or 7th century. This is mainly due to historical finds and the construction of the church.
Regardless of the stories about the Kreuzkirche to this day, it is certain that it is at least 1,000 years old and has served as a place of pilgrimage for centuries.
But it is also certain that Melsbach has a unique gem, because such a church no longer existed in the entire area. "
