The state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern emerged after the Second World War in the French zone of occupation and was one of the founding countries of the Federal Republic of Germany. It encompassed the southern part of the former People's State of Württemberg and the Hohenzollernsche Land, formerly part of the Free State of Prussia. About one million inhabitants lived on an area of 10,406 km². The capital was Tübingen, the seat of the state parliament was the former Bebenhausen monastery near Tübingen. On April 25, 1952, the states of Württemberg-Hohenzollern, Baden and Württemberg-Baden merged into the newly founded state of Baden-Württemberg.
