The Hervester Bruch and the entire stream system of the Wienbach has been a nature reserve since 2005 and you can see it straight away: Many animals live here, including some really big ones. Storks and many migratory birds feel at home here, as do Konik horses and Heck cattle. This does not mean, however, that hundreds of years ago it looked the way it does today: a former beech forest became an open moorland and heath landscape through deforestation until 1840, then became grassland and wetland criss-crossed by hedges, and large areas of water finally came about as a result of mountain subsidence and pond added. This is how today's landscape was created in several stages, always by human hands.

And its current residents are not here by chance either: nesting aids were set up for storks, Koniks and Heck cattle were specifically settled. Without them, a bush landscape with densely overgrown water areas would first develop here, and finally a forest again. The four-legged friends are basically grassland caretakers with fur and shape the landscape, just like their ancestors did a few thousand years ago. As these were hunted more and more, the forest that probably stood here around 2,000 years ago was able to expand.

The Hervester Bruch clearly shows that wherever people live, their influence always plays a key role in the development of nature and the landscape. Even where you wouldn't expect it at first glance. A circular hiking trail with some beautifully designed stations and observation points leads through the nature reserve.

As in any nature reserve, it is particularly important here to leave nothing behind, keep dogs on a leash and stay on the trails. In this way, we protect important sanctuaries for rare plants or animals that we may not even recognize as such.
